Discover Sergimmo Salumeria

Tucked into the rhythm of Midtown Manhattan, Sergimmo Salumeria at 456 9th Ave, New York, NY 10018, United States feels like the kind of Italian deli you hope to stumble upon but rarely do. I first walked in on a chilly afternoon between meetings near Hudson Yards, expecting a quick sandwich. Instead, I found myself lingering over imported prosciutto, watching fresh mozzarella being sliced to order, and chatting with the staff about their favorite panini combinations. That first visit turned into a regular habit.

The space is cozy and unpretentious, blending the charm of a traditional salumeria with the pace of a modern New York diner. Shelves are lined with olive oils, balsamic vinegar from Modena, artisanal pasta, and imported Italian cookies. The aroma hits you instantly-cured meats, aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, and freshly baked bread. It’s the kind of scent that makes you hungrier by the second.

The menu centers on classic Italian sandwiches, and they don’t cut corners. According to the Italian Trade Agency, authentic Italian cured meats like Prosciutto di Parma and Mortadella Bologna must meet strict production standards tied to geography and aging processes. You can taste that authenticity here. One standout is the Parma panini layered with delicate prosciutto, creamy burrata, arugula, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. The balance of fat, salt, and peppery greens reflects what culinary experts often call perfect flavor harmony-a principle widely discussed by chefs trained in traditional Italian gastronomy.

On another visit, I tried their homemade lasagna. The pasta sheets were tender but structured, the béchamel smooth without being heavy. The layering technique reminded me of what the Culinary Institute of America teaches about proper heat distribution and sauce-to-pasta ratios. It’s clear that whoever is behind the kitchen understands these fundamentals. Even something as simple as a Caprese salad feels intentional, with ripe tomatoes, fresh basil, and mozzarella that tastes like it was made that morning.

Portion sizes are generous, especially for Manhattan. In a neighborhood where lunch can easily climb past $20, the value here stands out. Many online reviews mention the same thing: solid pricing, authentic ingredients, and fast service. While it’s not a white-tablecloth restaurant, it consistently delivers what matters most-quality and consistency. That reliability builds trust, and in the restaurant world, trust is everything.

Beyond sandwiches and hot dishes, the salumeria offers catering trays stacked with antipasto, cold cuts, and Italian desserts. I once ordered a platter for a small office gathering, and it disappeared within minutes. The soppressata had just the right kick, and the aged provolone added sharp depth without overpowering the other flavors. The process of ordering was straightforward, and the staff double-checked dietary preferences, which showed attention to detail.

Nutritionally speaking, traditional Mediterranean ingredients-olive oil, fresh vegetables, legumes, and moderate portions of cured meats-are associated with heart health, as noted by research published by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. While a salumi sandwich isn’t exactly diet food, the emphasis on quality fats and fresh components makes it more aligned with balanced eating than typical fast food options.

Location-wise, being on 9th Avenue places it within walking distance of Penn Station and the Theater District. That accessibility makes it ideal for both locals and tourists looking for something more authentic than a chain restaurant. It does get busy during lunch rush, and seating is limited, so takeaway is often the smart move. Still, the turnover is quick, and the staff handles the crowd efficiently.

There are, of course, small limitations. The space isn’t designed for long, leisurely dinners, and the menu focuses heavily on Italian deli staples rather than expansive regional dishes. But that focus is part of its charm. It knows what it does well and sticks to it.

If you appreciate imported cheeses, expertly sliced charcuterie, and sandwiches that actually taste like Italy, this little Midtown gem delivers. Between the carefully sourced ingredients, consistent preparation, and welcoming service, it feels less like a quick lunch stop and more like a neighborhood staple that quietly earns its loyal following every single day.

  • The vibe here was great. It's a cute little restaurant just a few minutes from Times Square. The sandwiches are amazing and made with very fresh bread, and the lasagna I got was delicious. Both at very nice prices too! Daily specials that make eating there very affordable and better tasting than most other quick Italian places nearby.

  • Incredible sandwiches await you at this charming Italian deli-style restaurant. Despite its small size, the establishment offers cozy indoor seating that exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere. The staff is incredibly friendly, and the extensive menu boasts a multitude of excellent options, making it one of our preferred destinations for sandwiches. During our visits, we have had the pleasure of trying various items, but one standout favorite is the renowned Le "vip" sandwich, which consistently garners popularity. I, on the other hand, have been more adventurous, venturing into their pasta dishes and savoring the flavors of their grilled chicken panini. Every dish is crafted using fresh ingredients, and although their pasta is delectable, it is the sandwiches that truly captivate us, beckoning us to return. The bread, in particular, is exceptional—soft and perfectly fresh, seemingly baked in-house daily. The ambiance of the place is calm and relaxed, offering respite just a stone's throw away from MSG and Times Square. If you find yourself in the vicinity and craving Italian sandwiches that are satisfying without feeling overly heavy, do yourself a favor and give them a try!

  • Very good sandwiches. We had the different sandwiches, the Godfather, the number 1 and number 4. All were very good. Saved 1/2 sandwich for later because they are very big. Only game 4 stars for the atmosphere, because there was always a cold draft from the front door.

  • We enjoyed delicious pasta here! Very small and quaint, we went at 5 on a Sunday and it was great. Seemed a bit expensive, $23 for a bowl of spaghetti, $110 to feed a family of four. But, overall, we recommend it.
